Montauk, New York Train Station - LIRR

Most of the visitors who stray further east on Long Island than Queens will be heading out to the Hamptons, and Montauk is at the heart of the action. As well as having six State Parks, tourists are also drawn by fantastic beaches and range of activities on offer, including surfing and fishing. Hotels abound, and Montauk makes a great destination for a day trip, a week-long holiday, or even longer.

Transport Linkages

The Cannonball Service is one of the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) most popular services, and takes visitors directly from downtown Manhattan to Montauk. There are several bus services which also carry passengers from the Upper East Side of Manhattan, but the LIRR offers by far the quickest option.

Around Montauk

Montauk has a whole heap of attractions for families as would be expected of any popular beach resort. Whale watching is popular in the summer months, and there are lots of different operators offering trips out. There are also lots of operators offering sea-fishing trips throughout the year, although these too are more popular in summer.

Some of the other popular activities on offer include Scuba diving, surfing, waterskiing, kitesurfing, canoeing, sailing, boating, jet skiing, snorkeling, golf, tennis, horseback riding, bicycling and hiking. If you’re not completely spent after all of that, then other popular attractions in Montauk include the Montauk Observatory, the Second House Museum and Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum.

Most people visit Montauk to spend their time on the beach, and there are plenty of these to choose from, with sandy beaches, pebble beaches and surf beaches all close to central Montauk. Montauk is also home to countless restaurants where visitors can relax over a fresh seafood dinner and a glass of local wine.

Other Montauk Branch Stations

Most of the early stops on the Montauk branch serve predominantly commuters, but there are several destinations which may be of interest to visitors once you enter the Hamptons. The first is Patchogue stop, where visitors can see the beautiful natural beaches in the Fire Island National Seashore and enjoy activities such as canoeing, fishing and camping.

Mastic-Shirley is the place for visitors to get off for Mastic Beach, as well as the Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge. Westhampton and the neighboring Hampton Bays are the choice of many looking for a self-catering holiday rental rather than a hotel in the Hamptons, as the beaches are generally less crowded and the whole town has a very laid-back atmosphere.
