Port Washington, on the north coast of Long Island, is a metropolitan area with a focus on industrial operations at the port, which was named in honor of a visit by George Washington back in the 18th century. As well as serving Port Washington itself, the Port Washington Line of the LIRR also serves several other sights of interest to New York visitors.

Port Washington is served by that branch of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and forms the terminal end of the line around 20 miles from Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. The area is also served by the Long Island Bus service N23.

Around Port Washington

Port Washington is not a well-established area for tourism, although there are several sights of interest in the area and a number of hotels and guesthouses. Of particular interest to visitors may be the Science Museum of Long Island, which offers hands-on workshops for children to learn more about science and nature, and the Polish American Museum, which offers an insight into the culture of immigrants from Eastern Europe.

The Sands Point Preserve is a nature reserve set on over 200 acres, which features landscaped areas and nature trails, which offer a particularly pleasant escape from the city on a hot summer's day. The Harbor Links Golf Course is also nearby if a relaxing game of golf is more your thing.
