Long Island Transportation Links and Resources

There are a number of transport options which are open to those looking to travel to and from Long Island, as well as different options for getting around once you're there.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority operates both the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Long Island Bus services. The Long Island Bus service is one of Long Island's main transport links, joining outlying areas to central Queens. The Long Island Bus service runs across 60 different routes, and serves most of the main areas of Long Island including Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Long Beach and Glen Cove as well as many outlying areas.

The LIRR also serves 124 stations on Long Island, along both North Fork and South Fork as well as branching out to many other outlying areas. There are a total of 12 branches to the LIRR, each connecting Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan to Jamaica Station in central Queens as well as Babylon, Greenport, Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Beach, Montauk (The Hamptons), Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, Port Washington, Ronkonkoma and West Hempstead.

The New York subway system has many lines which run through Brooklyn on the far west tip of Long Island. Several of these lines also extend further east, running to Rockaway near the JFK airport (line A) and the Jamaica Center (lines E, J & Z) as well as meeting the LIRR at Flushing-Main Street station (line 7) and Jamaica Station (line F).

There are also various Long Island ferries which are operated by different companies and connect the North and South Forks of Long Island as well as connecting Long Island to other New York Islands and also Connecticut.
